Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad

Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad is a well-known scientist in the area of agro-climatology. Currently, he is a tenured professor in the Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad-Pakistan, Program Chair, Climate Change of Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Agriculture and Food Security and Vice-chairman of Confucius Institute which offers Chinese language, culture to the general masses of Punjab-Pakistan, along with linking the national organizations with People Republic of China through Science and Technology projects. He is the founder of the most vibrant and energetic group working on climate change related research in Pakistan from the last two decades.

Professor Ahmad has over 25 years of experience working with national and international Universities/organizations including Chiang Mai University, Thailand, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Indonesia, The University of Sydney, Australia, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, University of Maryland, College Park, USA, The University of Georgia Griffin, USA, Washington State University (WSU), University of California, Davis (UCD), Department for International Development (DFID), Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), Global  Change Impact Studies, Pakistan, Pakistan Meteorological Department, Pakistan etc. etc.

Professor Ashfaq has the track record of resources mobilization of more than 3.0 Million US$, built the capacity of more than 100 young and mid-career researchers from various government organizations all over the Pakistan and has produced more than 15 Doctoral students and more than 100 master students in the field of climate change related research, adaptation and mitigation strategies. He has developed state of the art, well-equipped infra-structure for climate change studies such as climate change cell and Greenhouses/Glasshouses, Free Air Temperature Enrichment (FATE) and Rainout shelter, Advanced Agro-climatology Lab, and Agricultural Information Management System (AIMS) for yield forecasting of major and minor crops in Punjab-Pakistan just to mention a few.

Professor Ashfaq Ahmad has proposed a number of adaptation strategies to cope with impact of changing patterns in climate on  wheat, rice, cotton, maize etc., published more than 150 research papers in peer-reviewed and well reputed journals; Further he has authored/co-authored of 05 chapters on different aspects of climate and crop production and has organized more than 50 national and international workshops/conferences/symposiums as Lead Resource Person and has been acknowledged as keynote speaker at various national and international conferences/seminars. He is a recognized Resource Person for Crops Simulation Models (CSM) and having strong technical background in optimization of site specific production packages for major and minor field crops; developed standards for determining the crop allometry, suggested plausible mitigation approaches for the policy makers and built capacity of trainees from Crop Reporting Service, Government of the Punjab and Sindh in crop yield estimation and forecasting through Remote Sensing.
